On repeat

I am lying on my bed staring at the hot pink zig-zags on my comforter. Emily is stroking my hair so gently I can barely feel it. My head is resting on her lap.

Vaguely aware of my surroundings, I do know five of my friends are in the room, watching me, uncomfortably.

“I didn’t see that truck. They took me to the hospital. Thirteen staples.”

Stephanie reaches out and pat my leg. Abby stares off to the into the distance silently with her mouth in a thin line. Ashley laughs at me.

A short 30 seconds later, I spoke as if it were a new thought, “Guys I didn’t see the truck. Spectrum Hospital…thirteen staples.”

Everyone looks around silently at one another. She’s broken.

“Blind spot…Spectrum…staples.”

“Luc!” Jenny’s voice cracks, “you said that three times already!”

I laugh at her thinking it was a joke.

I still wonder if I do that sometimes; forget and repeat. There’s no way to know.
